The 3-year PhD program requires the admitted students to take courses in the first one and a half year for at least 30 credits (CFU), typically courses of 6 or 7 CFU each. In two of these courses, the student must pass the final exam, which counts for 1 CFU. For example, a student could take 4 courses of 7 CFU (28 hours), two of which with final exam, totaling 30 CFU.

Perspective students follow a personalized program by selecting both core and specialized courses in their field of interest and conducting original research under the supervision of a member of the Faculty Board.
Students can select courses from the PhD Partner Departments and Institutions.

Multidisciplinary interchange with other graduate programs in the PhD schools of Pavia, USI Lugano and the other participating Institutes and  international partners is also encouraged.
